Five LSU Tigers Named To Watch List

BATON ROUGE – LSU placekicker Colt David, center Brett Helms, linebacker Darry Beckwith, offensive guard Herman Johnson and defensive end Tyson Jackson  have been named to watch lists for national awards it has been announced.  Beckwith, Johnson and Jackson are among three Tigers who have been named to the preliminary watch list for the prestigious Lombardi Award. The Lombardi Award, which was given to former LSU standout Glenn Dorsey in 2007, goes each year to the top interior lineman, including tight end and linebacker, in college football.  David, a first-team All-Southeastern Conference kicker in 2007, is one of 30 players from across the country that has been named to the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award. The Lou Groza Award is given to the top placekicker in college football. Last year, David set an SEC record by scoring a total of 147 points during LSU’s national championship season. David set an LSU record by kicking 26 field goals and he was a perfect 63-of-63 on extra-point attempts. Helms, a senior who enters his third year as a starter for the Tigers, is one the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which goes to the top center in college football. Helms, who graduated last May with a degree in management, has started 26 times at center during his career with the Tigers and LSU is 22-4 in those games.LSU opens its season on Saturday in Tiger Stadium when the sixth-ranked Tigers host Appalachian State at 4 p.m. The game will be televised to a national audience by ESPN.--30—
